Harmony Refugee Services works to meet the mental health and emotional needs of its refugee clients through a holistic and person centered treatment approach thereby facilitating healing of the person as a whole. Our team consists of our psychiatrist Dr. Yassar Kanawati, nurses, licensed Therapists and social workers, expressive therapists, community support individuals and interpreters. We treat clients for Depression, Adjustment Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, bereavement, and other disorders resulting in quality of life issues. Our services are strictly confidential and HIPAA compliant. We hold our staff to the highest level of professional standards and ethics. We work with our clients to achieve wellbeing through the use of the following services: Assessment - Clinicians at Harmony Refugee Services utilize a biopsychosocial assessment tool that has been tailored to working with clients of various backgrounds and cultures. The assessment takes between one to two hours and assesses the needs of the client not only from a mental health perspective but the perspective of the entire hierarchy of needs. It factors in the family members, the physiological needs, as well as medical and employment needs. We pride ourselves on seeing each client as an individual, as well as a member of a family and a community, all of which impact the clients over all wellbeing. Community Support Individuals - A Community Support Individual (CSI) will meet the client at home or at the office, depending on the preference of the client. The CSI provides resource linkage, skill building, such as parenting skills and communication skills. The CSI will also teach coping skills, such as anger management techniques and anxiety reduction skills. The CSI often speaks the same language as the client as well as English and can frequently act as an interpreter for doctors appointments and social service appointments which are all related to the treatment goals.
Therapy - Our Therapists provide Individual Therapy, Family Therapy and Art Therapy. These services are provided in the home or the office depending on the preference of the client. The therapists are required to attend cultural competency panel discussions
regarding the cultures of the clients with which they are working. The therapists are licensed and passionate about working with refugees.
![]() Play Therapy - Play therapy is a therapeutic approach tailored specifically for children. We have a large play therapy room as well as the ability to conduct play therapy sessions in the home. Group Therapy - Our groups are developed with our clients needs and cultures as the catalyst. We currently offer Art Therapy Group and an Arabic speakers Psychoeducation Group. Interpreters are identified as community members, who have social service back grounds and have been formal or informal interpreters in the past. They are educated on the rules of confidentiality and the importance of their role as the voice of both the client and the clinician. We currently contract with interpreters who speak, Swahili, Somali, Burmese, Karen, Tigrinya, Amharic, Nepali, Maban, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Bosnian, Farsi, Turkish and Hindi.
